Shoot Me With Finesse Sherlock, I'm An Idiot

Ok, so after watching Benedict Cumberbatch’s jaw dropping performance in Into Darkness I decided to do something that I’d been putting off for three years. People urged me to do it, they said I wouldn’t regret it and I said “yes, yes, I’ll do it later” and promptly forgot about it. It won awards and I still put it off. Martin Freeman entered my fangirl-sphere but I still put it off. I watched the whole first series of Elementary for some reason, but I couldn’t do this. But I’ve done it now. I’ve watched Sherlock (2010).

I realise that I’m a flipping idiot. Three years, THREE YEARS IT TOOK ME! I missed out on so much due to stupidity and thinking I had a life. I encourage you all to insult me because I bloody well deserve it, how the hell could I have missed out on that? Watching it confirmed my belief that Cumberbatch is a marvelous actor. Before I thought that there might have been a chance that it was just the role of Khan he excelled in, it could have been a brilliant character with a so-so actor, but NO. He makes the character of Sherlock incredibly compelling, I’ve watched many incarnations of him but I think by far that this is definitely the best. Theres a certain subtlety to his performance, Sherlock tries to suppress emotion but we see it seeping out which is intriguing viewing, and let’s face it, he’s pretty damn cool. Got to love that coat, I want to get myself one of those. Oh, and does anyone know just how Cumberbatch can memorise those lines and say it as fast as he does whilst staying in character? I think it’s amazing.

Martin Freeman is no longer the random guy from The Office anymore, he is Dr. Watson. Prior to watching the show I had heard both good and bad things about his character, the bad being that it felt like he added nothing to the show and that he was just there, but guess what? I’ve seen it now, so I’ll explain it to the narrow minded individuals. The character of Dr. Watson is put in the same position as the spectator, he is watching the events unfold and discusses it in his blog. His role embodies the audience within the show. And let’s not neglect everything he’s done, he has been in the same position of danger as Sherlock throughout the show, perhaps even more so because he is expendable, whereas Sherlock isn’t.

Let me bring you to what I think is the best part of the show. Moriarty. Andrew Scott plays the role of bat shit crazy criminal consultant to perfection. He manages to have crazy eyes and I’m pretty sure the actor isn’t crazy! Seriously, I get giddy every time he pops onto the screen, whether it’s as Molly’s gay boyfriend or the man that broke into the most secure places in England. I would say he plays a multifaceted character but it just feels like a new character every time he decides to mess with Holmes. I think Andrew Scott should get more recognition from the role and hopefully he will be able to hit it big, as he is extremely talented. I just hope and pray that he didn’t *spoilers*.................

die at the end of series two because I love it when he pops up on screen, his character is utterly fascinating. And he looks good in a suit.

The banter between Mycroft, Holmes and Watson is also always fun to watch and the update of classic storylines in the books was brilliantly done, I doubt it could have been done any better. After watching I wondered just how I managed to watch Elementary from start to finish but it took me three years to watch Sherlock. The supporting cast is also pretty amazing, I want Mrs Hudson as my Landlady. I do however have some criticisms about the show, mainly there only being three episodes per series. I understand that they are 90 minutes long but seriously, three episodes in not enough for me. I blasted through all the episodes in a day and I just wanted more, I had to watch them again! It is really annoying that I watched it so late, it’s so damn good! But whats more annoying is that Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are now becoming more and more successful, and Mark Gatiss has signed on for Game Of Thrones. Now, I do wish them all the success in the World, but it leaves the future of Sherlock in doubt. Will they have time to carry on? Well, they’re in the midst of filming series three now so I’ll just have to await its arrival and hopefully it’ll be recommissioned. For now through I guess ill just have to entertain myself with multiple viewings, and special features on the DVD’s (I paid extra to have next day delivery).

As Dr. Watson does, Live long and blog!

  1. I was skeptical at first too when I heard about this, however when I watched it I really enjoyed it. They have managed to make it modern without ruining it also I like the fact it is not just guns and gangsters. The relationship between Sherlock and Watson is one of the best things about this in my opinion, the chemistry between Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman really helps it as well. I think the first episode of the second series you get some great insight to Sherlock as a character.
