Reliving The Revenge Of The Romulans

The other night I was at a friends and we were fiddling around with my friends new Sky+ box and putting pretty much anything on record, one of the things being Star Trek (Abrams, 2009). Now, this is a film that I watched three times when released and have watched a further three, now four times, and I still enjoy it and always want more after its ended. My friend who has watched Into Darkness but never the 2009 film was enthralled, and I realised that I would never be able to feel the way she did whilst watching the film again, I couldn't watch the film for the first time again.

She turned to me every five minutes saying that she wished the film was real, that we were part of the crew of the USS Enterprise and I agreed enthusiastically as it is what I had felt when I first watched the first reboot film, I had even felt that way when watching the TV series. It is true that sometimes I imagine myself aboard the Enterprise but the daydream only lasts a couple of minutes at most before I realise its fiction and theres no way it could possibly happen. When I watched the film several years ago I could sit for hours imagining and writing tales of my experiences as part of the crew, defeating The M-113 Creature, The Gorn and many more foes. Yes, I wrote myself into fanfic, cue the loser heckles. But I didn't care, I was enamoured with the series and I wish I could go back in time to watch the film again for the first time just to be able to submerge myself in the World(s) of Star Trek.

Hannibal Vs. The Following

I've discussed the boom of serial killers on television recently, and honestly one of my favourite ones has to be Hannibal.
It was a different story when The Following began, but about 3 episodes in I lost my love for it. As a whole Hannibal is a much better show, despite its episodic nature which I understand because it's a show in its first season and it needs to get viewers interested rather than put them off with a complex plot line. I find the murders and recreations of the murders stunning from a visual point of view, and seriously who wouldn't? Also the acting within the show is at an elite level for network television. I wish I could say that about The Following because it has a solid cast that includes Kevin Bacon (who I will forever love) and James Purefoy, but I think that they've been given terrible material to work with.

Cult: You Could've Actually Been Decent

Im a big fan of Cult TV shows. I tend to get hooked and spend hours a day obsessing over them, even when they do get really rubbish and don't make any sense. So when The CW announce Cult I didn't even need to know anything about it before watching it.

I knew that it was in the works a few years ago, so I had hope that it would be good because the network had thought to revive it. Even after the bad casting choices for the leads (seriously, wooden actors from The Vampire Diaries and Melrose Place, I understand The CW want to be pretty but...) as I greatly admired the supporting cast. I could watch Robert Knepper eat and apple and be enthralled and I've loved Alona Tal since her days on Veronica Mars and Supernatural. Yes, I am a female and I did not raise my pitchfork to the character of Jo, I actually liked her. And the press release for the show that was released a little over a year ago seemed interesting. But then again I tend to be interested with anything involving murder. I watched The Following till the end.

Cloud Atlas Review: A Twisted Masterpiece or A Missed Opportunity?

‘Movie Night’ in the Ryan household is usually one up for debate in terms of its quality and the subject matter that the movie provides for us. My father and I usually opt for the science fiction genre whilst my mother sits quietly trying to decide if the film we have chosen is either a cruel joke or a form of visual torture. In this trend, me and my father nominated the recent DVD release of Cloud Atlas, which I promised my mother almost half-heartedly that she would “love”.

Kevin Corrgian: Why Isn't He More Well Known?

Will Smith, Hugh Jackman, Michael Sheen, Javier Bardem and Kevin Corrigan. What do they have in common? They're all 44 and extremely talented. Want to know what's atrocious? Most of you will probably only recognise four out of the five names. They are all on around the same level talent-wise but for some reason one of them isn't a household name like the others. Kevin Corrigan. Some American readers may know him from the early noughties as he was a regular on the show Grounded For Life, but he initially made a name for himself in critically acclaimed Independent films, which is probably why audiences aren't familiar with him as they don't always get exposure.

The Walking Dead: My Quick Trailer Review

(All information here is based on the trailer alone and no other source)

So is anyone else stoked about about season 4 after watching the trailer? If you haven't seen it then watch it NOW!

From what we can all see in this trailer, 'The Governor' does not make an appearance, suggesting that this season won't be all about the war between the prison group and the Woodbury group (although 'The Governor' MAY make an appearance in the season, it just won't be solely based on their rivalry). Instead, it will be more focused on  traitor(s) within Ricks' group and how they are going to survive knowing that there's a traitor in the group.

Nostalgia Time: Rayman

I'm going to tell you a story about a traumatic experience from my childhood due to the game Rayman. I'm not a gamer, but I play games. I used to play games A LOT. I remember falling asleep with my Gameboy Colour in my hands and discovering the next morning that my mother had turned it off and having a major meltdown. Reading Annie's post on her rage quitting bought it all back to me. I am was not a rage quitter, when playing my Gameboy I actually got obsessed and really stressed out about it, I'm pretty sure it gave me grey hairs. I could not put the game down unless i'd completed the section and saved it which is why Rayman was my nemesis.

The Cult Of The Serial Killer

Is it me or is there more serial killers on television than there were before? Dexter has been around for years but this past year several other shows have emerged that feature serial killers prominently.

These shows include Bates Motel, The Following, Hannibal, Cult, The Fall and to some extent Ripper Street. The majority of these shows have done reasonably well ratings wise and have been recommissioned which makes me ask the question, are serial killer shows becoming cult? The shows that were recommissioned had both large and small audiences and were steady with ratings and have vocal fan bases which shows that they have a loyal and dedicated audience which is one of the defining factors in making something cult.

Is Hollywood Watering Down It's Movies For Pre-Teens?

I got home last night to find an interesting post on my Facebook page:
"Food for thought, are R-rated films becoming extinct due to the more profitable PG/PG-13 films. Its one of the reasons Deadpool is stuck in developmental hell, Robocop is now PG-13. Nowadays its risky to commit to an R-rated film or a potential R-rated franchise. Films like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Carribean & Twilight are to blame for the declining interest from studios for R-rated films."
I hadn't really thought too much about it, but I do agree whole-heartedly. Naturally theres always been a market for films geared towards children but I'd never thought about how it affected films that are garnered towards a more adult audiences, of which Deadpool is a prime example. The character featured in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and was given minimal screen time, even though he is a major character within the Marvel franchise and has had several comic book series' devoted to him. The character should have had a MUCH larger role within the film (only one of the many things wrong with the film) but his background was never fully explored because of its dark nature. He was used as a cool looking villain in the PG film, and I feel that devalues the character completely! He SHOULD have a film devoted to him after the initial abysmal outing because it would be a great story to tell, and my buddy is correct about it being stuck in development hell because it's way too risky for studios nowadays.

Supernatural Summoning A Spin-Off

Did you like my use of alliteration on that headline there? Well I'm over a week into this blogging thing and I figure I should be a little be more journalistic, so rather than being objective with my views I decided alliteration. Now to the point, Supernatural, now has a spin-off in the works!

I agree with you Dean, what? I've been a Supernatural fan since I caught an episode in the middle of season 3, then promptly decided to binge on all the previous episodes till I was caught up. It took me several days, and I've probably never been so tired in my entire life but I was hooked. I just could not get enough. I watched episodes over and over again and any free time I had I spent on the message boards with my peers. No one else understood my obsession but them, I was just deemed a weirdo. It's complex storylines and probably the best acting I've seen on American television, certainly the best on The CW, had me enthralled and all the ballsy writing always kept me coming back for more. Obviously there are likeminded people in the World as the show is about to start its ninth season, and although it lost it's way a little in season 6 and 7 (will still never forgive Sera Gamble) I feel that It's now back to form.

Superman And Batman United! Is It Really A Good Thing?

So, some more news from the grapevine, Superman and Batman will be sharing the big screen.

Yep. We kind of knew it was happening but I didn't expect it so soon, I figured we would have to wait till the Justice League movie but apparently Batman will make an appearance in the Man Of Steel sequel. Before I actually watched Man Of Steel this news would've excited me, but now I feel that they are clasping at straws. Warner Bros. are trying to compete with Marvel, and why the hell shouldn't they? Marvel have done well and Warner Bros. have both the storylines and resources to compete.

And The Villain In The Avengers Sequel Is...

*Spoilers ahead, i'll try not to put too many in*

Comic Con brings us a lot, we've gotten The Amazing Spiderman 2 teaser trailer already and been and been given the title for the sequel of one of the biggest movies of all time. In the Summer of 2015 we will all be rushing into our local cinema's to watch The Avengers: Age Of Ultron. If the title didn't give the plot line away enough Joss Whedon confirmed that it will follow the storyline of the Age Of Ultron comic mini series. I won't go into the details of the comic too much so you're not completely spoiled, but I will tell you that the planet is under attack (obviously) and features a lot more of The Avengers (many of which Marvel don't have the film rights to), which is probably why Quicksilver has been recruited and we'll probably have an onslaught of casting news before the film begins filming next year. Oh right, If you hadn't already figured it out, the villain is Ultron!

Post-apocalyptic Pokémon action

I am not sure when this hack was made, and to be honest I have not played it yet. As I do with most games, I've been watching playthroughs on YouTube, but strictly the ones with the audio commentary.

Shoot Me With Finesse Sherlock, I'm An Idiot

Ok, so after watching Benedict Cumberbatch’s jaw dropping performance in Into Darkness I decided to do something that I’d been putting off for three years. People urged me to do it, they said I wouldn’t regret it and I said “yes, yes, I’ll do it later” and promptly forgot about it. It won awards and I still put it off. Martin Freeman entered my fangirl-sphere but I still put it off. I watched the whole first series of Elementary for some reason, but I couldn’t do this. But I’ve done it now. I’ve watched Sherlock (2010).

A Few Days Ago A Friend Asked Me ‘How Can I Un-tan?’.

I'll tell you something, I’ve been trying to get a tan for lets say about 7 years, and there’s no hope. No hope. I’ve travelled to the hottest of places and indulged myself under the scorching sun of the Middle East, it was of no use. So when a friend of mine asked me how she can un-tan, all the pent up anger I had to being unable to walk around with a nice caramel colour came out of my finger tips.

Not long ago I left my friends back home and came to the UAE, which believe it or not, is a ghost town in the mornings because of how hot it is. I, filled with anticipation to try again what seemed to be an ongoing routine of failure, went to the beach to tan. 4 hours and 2 bottles of water later, I ran to the changing room mirror awaiting to see my face, only to look like I pinched my cheeks for a minute or so.

It’s painful I tell you! But I wont give up! I’m going back home to see my friends, WITH A TAN!

Await my caramel colour London! And to that friend that asked me how she could un-tan, well here’s a tip, don’t go under the sun!!!

Lynch's Big Dream

“We think we understand the rules when we become adults, but what we really experience is a narrowing of the imagination.” David Lynch couldn’t have said it better. In this day and age everything seems to be against us and we forget how to stay true to our core beings. We learn how to limit ourselves, give less, ask for less, when in fact we all deserve the world. This is no ‘Learn how to stay positive in 5 simple steps’ but I do believe that if we all managed to go back and see everything through the eyes of the kids we were, the world would be an easier place to inhabit. We would be fearless in the choices we make, the things we say, the way we express ourselves.

Seth Rogen: My Top 5

Last week I was fortunate enough to finally watch This Is The End, a brilliantly funny film. One of the best things about it is the fact that the actors are playing themselves, and confronting every critique that has been thrust upon them in recent years. I'm just going to say it now, I love Seth Rogen, a few years  ago he could do no wrong in my eyes, but I guess maturity comes with my advanced years and I'm able to take him off of the pedestal that I placed him on after Superbad and see that he has unleashed some appalling things on audiences, The Watch, Observe and Report and Zack and Miri being amongst them (I don't really see the big deal about The Green Hornet). However, The Is The End shows  a return to form him and the rest of his merry band of soldiers, and I'd like to dedicate some time out of my busy *sniggers* day to reminisce about Rogen's better times and hope that the follow up's to This Is The End manage to be just as stitchingly funny as what came before them.

A Black Human Torch?

Hot on the heels of the gay Spidey talk there is now talk of having a Black Human Torch (a.k.a Johnny Storm) in the Fantastic Four reboot. You know that reboot everyone totally wanted to happen after the last Oscar worthy films? Yep, that's actually happening with actor Michael B. Jordan in consideration for the role of Johnny Storm. I'm not going to judge him and tell you whether he would be good or bad for the role because I know nothing about him, I don't ever recall watching him in anything so I'm not the most qualified person to discuss that. What I will discuss is the headlines, it doesn't point Jordan out as a front runner for the role but instead says things like "Black actor in contention for the role of the Human Torch". I understand the irony of me bringing that up seeing as though my headline addresses the race of the actor being mentioned.

The Amazing Spiderman 2 Teaser Trailer!

I freaking love comic con! I've wanted to go for years but never managed to because, you know, im poor. But youtube makes me feel like im there!!!! I spend hours on it after the con, just watching panels and any teasers that I may find but they are usually crappy quality, which is why I was so excited to find this:

I love spiderman. I love The Amazing Spiderman. I love Jamie Foxx. OH MY GOD IT'S HERE. I've watched it five times now and I'm completely pumped! I want Sony to take my money right now! I love comic con. The only thing horrible about this is that the film isn't out till next year, so we will be teased for a whole year before we see the end product. It certainly beats The Amazing Spiderman's last comic con teaser of the CGI spidey, I mean what a disappointment. Again, thank you Comic Con!

I'm probably going to go and hibernate until next Summer, so Live Long and Blog!

Now You See Me, I Wish I Hadn't Seen You!

I remember the first time I watched the Now You See Me Trailer, it was during the previews of Fast & Furious 6. It completely blew me away, and I remember turning to my gaggle of friends and saying "we have to see this" and them nodding furiously in agreement. I can't remember the last time I was so excited about a movie that wasn't a reboot/prequel/sequel/adaptation (pretty much everything is these days), I was looking forward to watching what I felt was a highly original movie. This is why it upsets me so much to write this. *possible spoilers after the video*

When first watching this trailer I figured the film would be a heist film with the theives, the 'magicians', using the magic as a get out of jail free card. This is what captivated my interest, I had seen heist films but never anything like this so it seemed fresh and wholly original. The trailer even says it, "the more you think you see, the easier it will be to fool you". They are fooling the World into believing in their magic, which is pretty much impossible. I figured the only way I'd be disappointed is if they tried to tie in real magic in the film. *sigh*

The Fall: Why It Ended Well

I loved watching The Fall when it aired on the BBC a couple of months ago, so at the time of its finale I couldn't really understand the audiences complaints about the ending. Recently I decided to have a marathon of the show just to see if other viewers had seen something I hadn't, to figure out why it was hated. And I am still none the wiser, I liked the ending, it keeps me wanting more which is what the writers wanted! And really? Would you have just ended with him being caught? People are mouthing off about it being unrealistic that they didn't catch him, but guess what? It kind of is realistic.

Fox Finally Did Something Right

It's been three long years since 24 ended, and three long years of Fox, the cast and the crew teasing us about the spin off film. I know that it was never as good as the first season, it was damn near atrocious around season six and seven but I love season 8, and there wasn't a character like Jack Bauer on television, a character that we root for even though he lives by his own rules, whether its torture or murder. I didn't want it to end the way it did, it needed to finish somehow. Somewhere along the two year mark I had lost faith, news stopped popping up and Kiefer Sutherland had moved onto Touch (criminally under watched), I figured it was dead in the water. But finally, finally Fox pulled its finger out. Fox has never been one to make good decisions, I don't really need to say Firefly again do I? Fox gave 24 a final 12 episode order!

Obsessions. How much is too much?

One day, a few years ago I was walking home from high-school on a gloomy autumn day. I don’t exactly know what made me turn to it, but I believe I was having a particularly bad day (teenage identity crisis of some sort). I had a light bulb moment and I knew that there was one thing only that could improve my mood. And I did it. I walked into the store and bought myself a few sachets of hot chocolate. I was also home alone, which infused me with a sense of cozy loneliness - the type that you long for after you've had the longest family dinner with your inquisitive relatives (that you wish never to have met, for that matter). And it happened so quickly. I was hooked. I became a junkie for hot chocolate. I drank my body weight in hot chocolate. I wished hot chocolate would run though the tap. This soon made me realize that my obsession, as delicious as it was, needed to come to an end.

Thank you Summer Glau, You Give Me A Reason To Watch Arrow Next Season!

I will say it now, I have a major girl crush on Summer Glau. I have done ever since Firefly. What Firefly fan doesn't love Summer? And i'll also tell you that I was disappointed in Arrow last season, i'm not saying that it was bad but after the preview that was released before the debut I was on the edge of my seat, but the excitement did really last the whole season.

It turned out to be more episodic than I'd hoped, which I understood because every show needs filler episodes, especially a show in its first season which needs to grab attention of casual viewers easily and you can really do that with a complex plot, which is a damn shame because I believe that the overall story arch was amazing and I both loved and hated the season finale. The last episode was a major risk because it had Oliver, our hero, losing to some degree which I love to see because it humanises the character. Oliver isn't Superman, he's essentially just a guy. And i'm torn over the next thing I will discuss, I think it was ballsy and completely unexpected but I still get sad thinking about it *spoilers*

Into Darkness, You Bring Me Great Light

As I’d mentioned before I have watched Star Trek Into Darkness four times, and that isn’t because I'm anal and need to pick out every little detail, it’s because I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m no Armond White, this is not a lengthly shitty review of the film, because I believe you should go and watch the films and figure it out for yourselves. That being said, I love to hear myself talk so I will tell you my thoughts about it, but no star rating and I’m not going to tell you to go and watch it or to burn the posters. There will most definitely be spoilers ahead to if you don’t want to be spoiled I’d suggest you stop reading right... Now.

Gay Spiderman?

In a recent interview Andrew Garfield said that he would like Spiderman to be gay, and perhaps MJ be a man in the new series. It got me thinking, why not? For some reason people still haven't got over the Raimi trilogy so when MJ does pop up in the Amazing series people are going to be so judgemental and won't accept her (which I don't get because Kirsten Dunst wasn't exactly great). And even without the previous trilogy Sony would never be able to make all the fans happy because MJ is so hard to live up to. I firmly believe that if when they do bring MJ in they should do it after Gwen Stacy has died and Emma Stone should play her too, I think she's the only person that can pull it off. So basically I wouldn't be happy either.

The pride of the rage quitter

My name is Annieboy and I am a rage quitter.

No matter what the game, no matter what the platform, no matter what the console, I rage quit.

I think that I am alright for about two or four attempts. But that's when my blood starts boiling, when everything around me will potentially become a missile heading for the walls and the doors and out the window.
Basically, I become this guy.

Spock Vs. Spock

After watching Star Trek: Into Darkness for the fourth time I felt that I was qualified enough to go onto the message boards and discuss the film with fellow fans. I read something that really got to me, someone had said that they would never support Zachary Quinto, he would never be a good enough Spock, and that the character belongs to Leonard Nimoy. I’m assuming that this was an old, loyal fan of the Star Trek series, even if he/she was talking (writing) like a 13 your old child. I’m a fan of the old series, but I embrace the new one, I think its absolutely brilliant that its still Star Trek but has moved into the mainstream. I can watch the films openly with friends that weren’t interested in the franchise before, it renews interest in the original series.
